DIRECTIONS:
-First cut your frame/mat to the size you desire.
I used shipping cardboard, the ones you get in the mail with your 12 x 12 paper.
(OR you could use cheap mats from the dollar tree, dollar store, dollar spot)
-Once you have your mat cut, pick 2 contrasting paints of your choice. 1-dark paint for the base coat. 1-light paint for the top coat.
(I used Dark Pink as the base coat, and light pink for example #1 and buttermilk for example #2 for the top coat.)
-First paint your mat with the base coat.
-Let base coat Dry Completely.
-Second Paint the crackling medium over your base coat.
****BE CAREFUL to make sure you have plenty of crackling medium on your brush, and make as few as strokes as needed to cover the mat.****
-Let crackling medium dry completely. (THIS takes several minutes)
-Then, Paint top coat of paint over crackling medium.
****BE VERY CAREFUL to have PLENTY of top coat paint on your brush and make and make as few as strokes as needed to cover the mat.**** (If you try to do more strokes, it ends up taking the medium off, turning into a clumpy mess, and it doesnt work). ****
You will begin to see instantly the paint start to crackle. This means the paint is drying once it starts crackling.
IF YOU WANT A DISTRESSED/CRACKED FRAME/MAT:
-Let your mat dry for a good 15 minutes.
-Take a pigment stamp pad and "dab" or "pounce" on desired areas of mat.
IF YOU WANT THE PIECED LOOK ON YOUR FRAME:
-IF you want the pieced look of the frame (As in my examples) take a craft knife and cut from inside corner of the frame, through the outside of the corner.
-Make sure to label the backs of each piece of frame as you cut, to make it easier to place back together.
-I also distressed with ink pads on the cut corners.
IF YOU WANT "Nail" PIECED LOOK ON YOUR FRAME:
-I used my eyelet template to mark the areas for the brad placement. Took my paper piercer, pierced a hole through the markings and placed a brad.
-Placed the brads.
-Then, I used double sided tape to place onto layout.
