OK. I learned the awesomest way to distress metal in his class!

This is GREAT for the tape you run around memory glass (so it's not so shiny). It can work for other metals, too:

Cut your metal to size (if cutting).
Lay it out on a nonmetal surface that will contain any runoff liquid.
Apply BLACK PATINA (http://www.glassmart.com/patinas.asp) to it with a q-tip.
DONE. (You don't have to use THIS web site to order your black patina -- I have never used this web site. It's just an example. If you have a stained glass shop around, you should be able to buy black patina from them.)

WORDS OF WARNING:
1. Black Patina WILL distress ALL metal it touches, including wedding rings.
2. DO NOT double-dip the q-tip into the solution, because doing so will neutralize the whole batch.

Tim bought a small plastic bottle (like the ones for acrylic paint with a flip-top lid) and squirts a little of the patina on the qtip, so there's no danger of contaminating the whole bottle of solution.

The cool thing? It's SUPER cheap!

Oh, and evidently there are other patinas out there. He just happened to use black patina for this project. :shades:

Here's MORE INFO (http://www.beadshop.com/learnonline/dictionary/metal/silverblack.aspx) about patinas.

I've used a bronze/green patina to age a bunch of stuff. You can find it in pretty much any craft store or WM.

In WM?

(I am NOT surprised you knew this, but I know *I* didn't know it!)

Yup! lol I bought some there and some at J's when I was redoing my room. I aged my mirror frame and some vases. You can get patina in a whole range of colors!

It's in my gallery. :)

Is it part of the necklace? All I'm seeing are the necklace and pics of Tim. I'm new to all of this, so chances are I just don't know where to look :cyclops: I'll have to do a little more browsing through your gallery. You've got some really cute items in there.

Sorry! Yes, it's the license-plate thingies on the necklace. I will see if I can scan and upload a closer image.

Ah, much better! For some reason I had pictures in my mind those metal sheets with the patterns embossed on them and you were rubbing as little black into the pattern. I have no idea where that came from, but it's what I was looking for. The distressing looks really good. I may have to try that. I have some thin metal sheets that I use sometimes. I also have some metal screening material that is going into my home improvement scrapbook. I bet it would look really great on that! Thanks for the idea!

My pleasure! One note: patina IS an acid, so be careful when you use it. Make sure it's in a well-ventilated area and use rubber gloves.
