This is what I did for my altered paint can, but obviously it can be adjusted to suit your needs!
Paint Can Example (http://www.scraplove.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=1146)
You'll need to decide on three colors or patterns - one for the top, one for the middle, and one for the bottom. Start with 12x12 paper, then cut as follows:
Bottom: 2 pieces each 4" wide. Cut 2 1/2" from one strip. (So one is 12" long and the other is 9 1/2" long)
Top: 2 pieces each 3" wide. Cut 2 1/2" from one strip (same as above) Using the longer of the two strips, mark the top of the strip on the back.
Measure 1 1/2" from the top and 3/4" from the end. Mark that point and punch a 1" circle with that point as the center. Repeat on other end.
If your paint can handle can be removed, remove it and slide the punched circles over the circles where the handle attaches to the can.
If the handle does not remove, cut a slit from the punched circle to the end of the strip. The slits will be covered by the other strip.
Middle: 2 pieces 2" wide. Cute 2 1/2" from one strip (again)
Glue bottom strip on first, then top strip (after punching holes) then middle strip. Cut a circle for the top and glue in place. Decorate further as you wish.
Honestly, it's easier than it sounds!
