Verizon is showing these ads on tv DSL for dial up prices. I go to check it out because that is cheaper than what I am paying to have dial up and callwave each month. But it says DSL isn't available for my number. Huh? Why? I don't understand it, or how it works... but I live in a pretty big city and I live smack in the middle of it not on the outskirts. Why wouldn't I have access to DSL?

I don't know the "technical" reason, but I know we can't have DSL here on this side of the military base, but just across the road can have it... something to do with the type of lines there. We don't have those lines over here... we can have cable internet but not DSL.

Maybe my lines are too old? well, doesn't that just suck.

Maybe that's it... the lines on the other side of the base are newer...

I've seen thos ads too. DSL sure has come down. We only pay $9.95 for Netscape dial-up & right now we just can't afford anymore. Esp. with what natural gas & auto gas is gonna cost this winter.

Exactly, we are trying to save every little penny too. DSL would be cheaper if it were available. :(
I can't live without my internet access...... I can't, I won't..... you people are my sanity!

We had trouble getting dsl at the office - and we're in a large complex of offices - they said dsl wasn't available yet - and that our lines were too old and not compatable.
Then, like a MIRACLE, 2 months later we were all of a sudden compatable. And the DSL fairy came to visit...

What type of service do you have Paula?
I'm cheap;I run bare minimum on everything. So the sad thing is we can't really cut back on much else. I run a pretty tight ship as it is. Dial-up sucks but at least we have internet.

Paula I have the same problem. All of my immediate neighbors have DSL and I've been trying to get it at my house for almost 2 years now!! Everytime I call (which is almost every month!) they tell me that there are no available ports left and that I have to wait until they update the current lines, which supposedly they are in the process of doing right now. :grrr: yet, I still have to wait.....

Chris, I using Netzero hi-speed (which isn't really speedy) I pay 14.95 a month plus another 4.00 to have callwave so I know who is calling me (aka... I can ignore the in-laws and call back my friends)
I may cut back to the regular Netzero, but as slow as my internet hookup runs now..... I can't imagine dealing with something even slower.... <shudder>

ugh, how frustrating! You watch........ by the time I get DSL availability... the offer will have ended. That is the way my luck works lol

Paula, We tried to get Verizon when we lived in Bedford and they told us that it wasn't available in our area. I don't think their area is very big. Here it is the same thing. And what is really weird, is that someone across the street can have one thing and we can't get the same thing because they sold out to different companies. It is really strange.

Mine too. I'll probably call and they'll tell me all of the openings have been filled already...

Hi all!
Just a bit of info (from what I learned doing research on Verizon for my MBA):
DSL can only run on newer phone lines that can handle both data and voice.
You have to be a certain distance (and no farther) from one of the carrier's "central offices". This is NOT a REAL office; it is a hub where the DSL customers' connections are plugged into the carrier's system.
Because DSL is a DIRECT connection to the carrier, you may have to wait for them to install more ports (if all the available ports are already sold to other customers). Cable internet is a SHARED connection.
There are pros and cons to both DSL and cable. The direct connection (DSL) means your speed is not influenced by your deviant neighbor downloading porn all night, and his speed is not influenced by you updating your gallery all night. But, you also start off slower than cable. With cable, you have SHARED bandwidth. This means if your deviant neighbor is downloading porn all night while you are uploading to your gallery, BOTH your connections will slow down.
The $14.95 version of DSL Verizon is offering is a lower bandwidth than "regular" home DSL service. Business DSL is faster than home DSL.
There. All confuzzled now? :)

i believe DSL only works within a 3-5 mile radius of the central circuit station. If the lines are "cut" at a hub and branched further out, those after the "cut" can't get dsl. I am 8 houses down the road from the main highway...my bf's shop is on the highway across th stree from my road...they have DSL but can't get cable. I have cable ubt can't get DSL.
